Very true, Sharon. What I'm addressing here is the distribution of opinion. When voters are concentrated toward the middle of a single distribution, each side tries to shape the political discourse by moving the Overton Window in their direction. What I think is different about today's politics is we have a bimodal distribution of opinion where there is a traditionally "normal" modality and a second MAGA modality that is divorced from the rest. No politician can effectively reach the radicals.
