Odd Years

While our focus has been on the unprecedented political and judicial events of the past weeks and the huge election that’s still one year away, a smaller election snuck up on us.

Next Tuesday is Election Day 2023, and for most of us that means a smattering of local races and ballot initiatives. No question these are important. If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to vote.

Where national implications are concerned, though, off-year elections give us little to work with. And the year before a presidential election is the off-est of off years. At least the year after a presidential features gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, and a chance to measure the size of the voter backlash to the previous year’s winners.

Little will be decided next week with relevance to next year’s main event, but there are a few interesting contests of note.

Dueling Abortion Votes

The most talked-about elections will take place in Ohio and Virginia, where contrasting approaches to the abortion issue will be on display.
