Let’s Do This: Next week, We Can Send a Message to Donald Trump About His Unpopularity That Even He Can’t Ignore

Donald Trump lives in a bubble of misinformation. Inside this bubble, his approval rating is 64% and his record on the economy is “an A+++++.“ He also views his war in Iran as a complete success, and his advisors are too afraid to tell him otherwise (emphasis mine):
Inside the administration, some officials are growing pessimistic about the lack of a clear strategy to finish the war [in Iran]. But they have been careful not to express that directly to the president, who has repeatedly declared that the military operation is a complete success.
You might think that there is no way to pierce Donald Trump’s bubble of misinformation and send him a message letting him know just how unpopular he really is. However, I disagree. In fact, I think we have a pretty good chance to send him exactly that message this coming Tuesday.
Here’s how. On March 24, only six days from today, there will be a special election in Florida state House District 87, which includes include Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. If Democrats win a special election in the red district where Donald Trump actually lives, that will let him know how unpopular he really is.
Florida state House District 87 is a winnable district for Democrats. Back in November 2024, Trump won this district by 11 points, or 55% to 44%, over Kamala Harris. However, in the roughly 100 special elections for state legislature since then, there has been an average pro-Democratic swing of 12.9 points, which would be just enough to turn this district the lightest shade of blue.
While Donald Trump may live in this district, one person who does not is the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate:
President Donald Trump, hoping to prevent a Democrat from representing him in Florida’s statehouse, has endorsed the Republican running for the seat in a special election this month—even though the candidate’s home is not in the district and he recently moved his voter registration to a cheap beach motel to satisfy state law.
A cheap motel, lol.
The Democratic nominee in next week’s special election in Donald Trump’s home district is Emily Gregory. You can click on her name to view her campaign website and learn more about her.
