Let’s Do This: The Winnable Florida Special Election on March 24 in a District That Includes Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Resort

When it comes to special elections, I have some bad news, but also some really cool news.
First, the bad news. You should know that on Tuesday night in Georgia, Democrat LeMario Brown was defeated in the runoff election for the 18th state Senate district. Brown lost by 19 points, which was four points better than Kamala Harris did four years ago, and three points better than Joe Biden did in 2020, but not enough to flip this red district. My thanks go out to LeMario Brown for his courage in running for this seat, and to the 956 readers of Wolves and Sheep and its associated news and activism email list, Bowers News Media, who collectively donated at least $12,261 to Brown’s campaign.
Now, for the really cool news!
On March 24, there will be a special election in Florida state House district 87. This seat was held by a Republican before it was vacated, but Democrats can definitely win it. Donald Trump carried the district 55-44 in 2024, but that margin is roughly equal to the average pro-Democratic swing in special elections that have taken place in 2025-2026. Further, the district was practically tied in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, according to The Downballot.
What makes this special election particularly notable, however, is that it includes Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. It is literally taking place in Donald Trump’s backyard!
The Democratic nominee is Emily Gregory, who had to file a lawsuit before Gov. Ron DeSantis finally called a special election to fill this long-vacant seat. You can read more about Emily Gregory on her campaign website, and donate to her directly here.
I have created an ActBlue page where you can split a donation between Emily Gregory and Bowers Kerbel Media, which is the organization that operates Bowers News Media and Wolves and Sheep. The amount you give to each entity can be altered by clicking “customize amounts.” No donation to Bowers Kerbel Media is required in order to donate to Emily Gregory.
