Life in Activism Memo #6: You Don't Have To Take Sides on Everything
It can be better for your peace of mind if you don't
This is a difficult moment for Democrats. After the first presidential debate on June 27, a significant internecine conflict over the future of President Biden's candidacy burst into the open. The argument over whether President Biden should drop out or stay in has consumed the national political discourse, especially among Democrats, leaving little space for anything else to be discussed.
At this moment, I have what might read as a counterintuitive message for grassroots Democratic activists: You don't have to have an opinion on this one. In fact, unless you have already taken a side and dug in—as I can tell that quite a few of you have, from your replies to my action emails—you will likely maintain a healthier emotional state and extend your longevity as a grassroots activist by not taking a side and just letting this one run its course over the next few weeks.
