Life in Activism: Three Things You Don't Need to Worry About Right Now
There is plenty to worry about—just not this
There is A LOT to be concerned about in our national politics right now. Donald Trump is threatening trade wars, bringing expansionism back again, and doing about all he can to dismantle our system of global alliances. Republicans in Congress are working hard to slash the social safety net, especially Medicaid and food stamps, in order to pay for extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts. There are many indications that the Trump administration is even engaging in illegal activity, including impoundment of congressionally appropriated funds, firing Inspector Generals without giving notice to Congress, and dismantling agencies such as USAID without authority. And all of this is only a very partial list of what is happening right now.
However, in reading the many, many replies to my emails at Bowers News Media, as well as the comments to my articles here at Wolves and Sheep, I have also noticed a few common sources of concern that I believe Democrats should not, in fact, be worried about. Three of the most common of these are:
Social Security benefits are about to be cut
Republicans will win in 2026 and beyond by suppressing Democratic votes through voter roll purges, voter ID requirements, and generally making it harder to vote
Trump will seize dictatorial powers in a military coup and cancel all future elections
For paid subscribers, below the fold, I offer details why, when there is so much to be concerned right now, we should rest easy at least when it comes to these three fears. In presenting these, I hope to allay at least some of what I imagine are your many, many concerns right now.
