Earlier this week, the Harris campaign and the Democratic National Committee announced it is spending almost $25 million to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot. That money will fill the coffers of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democratic Governors Association, the Democratic Attorneys General Association, and the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.

It’s a bold and unusual move, made possible by the campaign’s unprecedented fundraising. And it sends a signal that Harris is thinking past November. By supporting Senate, House, gubernatorial, state attorney general, and state legislative candidates, she is looking to shape the political environment she would inherit if she is elected.

Harris is thinking about governing.

To avoid the stalemate and frustration of divided government, she is going to need a broad enough victory to carry legislative majorities with her.

It’s part of thinking big. On Monday, I wrote about the potential for a large Harris win to break the hold that MAGA has on the Republican party. Should Trump become an unambiguous electoral liability rather than an asset, Republicans will start seriously considering what it would mean to break away from him, potentially denying MAGA the political home that makes the movement so dangerous.
