Helpful advice, Chris. No magical thinking! As a friend has said, "Life's a cinch by the inch, but hard by the yard." A comment on today's Velshi show (MSNBC) pointed to the contrast between a divided populace (the aim of autocrats) and a people in solidarity (like Walesa's Poland and America in World WAR II. In disunity you have the tragedy of the Nazi era (Martin Niemoeller's words: "In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up . . . Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.") In solidarity you have numerous successes typified in Margaret Mead's maxim on minorities: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

This is going to be a case of the tortoise winning the race. Slow, steady, non-violent, moving one foot at a time while fueled on the hope we give to each other.

Steve, thank you for all your wonderful information ( although at times, it makes me feel sad and angry) I absolutely agree with you that we are in for a long haul.. Doing little things like joining a phone bank, writing postcards, donating, educating myself on bills, Congress and events, protesting .. all these things have helped me to not become discouraged and disheartened..

I sent postcards for the Wisconsin Supreme Court vote.. and I'm so glad I was able to contribute a little.

Thank you for all that you do.

I really enjoy reading your posts. There is so much noise, anxiety and fear out there. And of course trump seems to be reveling in the chaos as he makes himself rich at America's expense. It feels as if we are losing a little bit of America each day. It is good to read a logical, level approach as to how we can proceed to recover what is quickly being lost. And claiming the hope that if we stay the course and do our bit, it will all be ok in the end and we will be able to get America back.

Excellent, reasoned article. One thing you didn't mention is that even if Trump could be removed from office, we would have Vance as President - no great improvement there!

True, Teresa. One bridge at a time. But Vance is smart, and could learn the lesson if he's blessed enough to be given the chance. I hope!

Thanks again for the words of wisdom, Chris. I’m one of those get to the end where we win people as well so your frequent reminders of what’s true help me tremendously. Staying calm and patient is a huge ask but I see that it’s necessary. Even though it may seem annoyingly repetitive to you, please continue reminding people like me. It’s a valuable service.

While having our weekly coffee meeting with a group of politically like minded women, one of the women mentioned that she was feeling depressed having been working so hard and seeing few wins. I shared my strategy about staying upbeat and energized:

Appreciate every win you can get with the knowledge that with each win, more people take notice and get involved. How about this week’s Supreme Court ruling in Drummond v. Oklahoma? No tax dollars to finance religious charter schools! We won! If that doesn’t lift your spirits…

Chris, I'm equivocal. Although I generally agree with you that we're stuck in several ways until 1/20/29, I do wonder what happens if Dems take over the House and Senate in 1/27.

I certainly agree that 3.5%, or 99.9%, of the population don't get Donnie's attention. His level of disinterest, and self-interest, are breathtaking.

Nixon thought 2/3 of the Senate would convict him, or he didn't want to face impeachment, and I'm not sure what would happen if 2/3 of the '27 Senate, plus the current Senators who are self-admittedly too afraid of him, would convict Donnie.

The fact that there couldn't be a successful armed rebellion is of critical importance. You are certainly right about that, and the reason is that the "Second Amendment" no longer exists: civilians cannot form the militia the "Second Amendment" permits, because the arms they would need are in fact already "infringed." There's an important SCOTUS case in there.

As for your #4, no one has to lower Donnie's approval ratings. He's doing that very well by himself.
