thanks for the succinnt recap of television (as spectator sport) and the slide of cable channel news towards feeding the sensational vs. the sane . . . . Very clear and helpful info.
I believe that it is critically important for the economy to be in a state that supports democracy, for democracy to survive and thrive for the long term. I have just recently become convinced that this means a free market economy, like some of the earlier economists claimed. However, I also wish to note that a free market economy is absolutely NOT an uncontrolled economy. A free market economy must have many suppliers and many purchasers of each good or service. If the market is uncontrolled (or poorly controlled), then it is quite likely that a few wealthy individuals will be able to set up monopolies in subsets of that market, or obtain extra profits through price control agreements. THIS IS NOT A FREE MARKET! A significant part of our reaction must be to reestablish control over the economic markets, to be actively, and for the near term, fairly agressively, breaking up monopolies, and preventing price collusion, to restore the real free market.
I’m sharing the comment about Sen. Jon Osoff with our senators as part of my thanks to them for legislation which places significant limits on immigrant treatment and detention centers in our state.
Next step is to allow all Americans (Wash. DC, Puerto Rico, other American Island territories) to vote for president who wins by popular vote.
