Yesterday was Super Tuesday—the day in the calendar when contested primary races are supposed to whittle away candidates who don’t have the resources or the voter strength to compete in multiple contests across the country. It was Nikki Haley’s last stand but she went out with a bang, telegraphing real trouble for Donald Trump as he moves to the general election. In contrast, Democrats didn’t have a contested primary (sorry, Dean Phillips), and yesterday’s outcome indicated that Biden should be able to bring the party together once the general election campaign begins. On today’s podcast, I’ll share my initial impressions of yesterday’s balloting and what it may tell us about challenges facing both presumptive nominees. Also, I’ll take a step back and look at where the general election contest stands now, and why political conditions today do not reflect what we would expect to see once things really gets started.
CORRECTION: I inadvertently stated that Donald Trump won the Minnesota primary by 30 points. The correct figure is 40 points.
