In the Pennsylvania primary last week, Nikki Haley performed extraordinarily well in the suburban counties surrounding Philadelphia despite having dropped out of the race long ago. It’s a sign that Donald Trump is facing headwinds with suburban voters in this hotly contested swing state. I wanted to get a ground-level perspective on what’s happening in one of the most important regions of one of the most important states in the country this cycle. So I spoke with Charlotte Valyo, chair of the Chester County, PA Democratic Party. Charlotte is in her third year as county chair. Last year, she presided over a clean sweep of county offices by a party that not too long ago struggled to compete in what had long been a red-leaning region. She shares her thoughts about the issues motivating suburban Philly voters, the grassroots approach she’s taking to engage and mobilize them, and why she is optimistic that Democrats will do better this year in Chester County than they did four years ago.
